Sascha’s Secret Love Letter #51
Quotes From The Heart
“We are told that people stay in love because of chemistry, or because they remain intrigued with each other, because of many kindnesses, because of luck. But part of it has got to be forgiveness and gratefulness.”
— Ellen Goodman
Goodman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who wrote beautifully about intimate life for decades. This quote earns its place here because it adds texture to the conversation about effort versus force. Real relationships do require work but a very particular kind. Not pushing something to be what it isn’t, but the quieter work of forgiveness, appreciation, and choosing to stay when you genuinely want to. That’s not the same as forcing. That’s love with its sleeves rolled up.
Try this: Reflect on a relationship where you felt genuinely grateful rather than exhausted and what made the effort there feel worthwhile rather than depleting.

The Research on Why Forcing Relationships Is Also Exhausting Your Immune System
A 2025 study that tracked people as they moved from singlehood into dating found that the biggest well-being gains from entering a relationship were in sexual satisfaction, relationship status satisfaction, and loneliness reduction but only in people who actually wanted a partner to begin with. People who entered relationships while feeling ambivalent saw almost none of those gains. The practical implication is straightforward: entering a relationship from scarcity or fear does not deliver the same return as entering one from genuine desire and readiness. The container matters as much as the connection.
Question for you: Have you ever entered a relationship because you were ready for one, versus entered one because being single felt uncomfortable and did the experience feel different depending on which it was?

The Skill That Built Your Career Is Ending Your Dates
There’s a story told to women like you so often it starts to feel like a diagnosis: you’re single because you’re too selective, too independent, too much. It travels well because it sounds plausible. But most of the time, it’s simply wrong.
What’s actually happening is more interesting than that. The same faculty you’ve spent years sharpening professionally the ability to read a situation accurately before anyone’s spelled it out for you doesn’t switch off when you sit down across from a man. It keeps working. And in dating, that accuracy often registers before the other person has finished presenting their carefully managed first impression.
The instinct isn’t the problem. The problem is not having a framework to know when you’re reading a real signal versus feeling an old wound.
One is pattern. The other is memory. And they feel identical in the body, which is exactly where most intelligent women lose the thread.
This week’s video is the longest and most precise thing I’ve put together on this topic. It deserves the full listen.
Try this now: Think of the last time someone pulled back from you. Ask yourself honestly: what was actually happening in their behavior, versus what story you built around it?

Your Secret Invitation
Estés writes about the wild woman, the instinctive part of you that knows what's good for her long before logic catches up. A lot of women learned to override her early, because being easy got more love than being honest.
If you’d like to read Women Who Run With the Wolves, you can find it on Goodreads or wherever you usually buy your books.
Reflection: When did you last ignore a gut feeling to keep the peace?
Note: Your instinct was never the problem. It just hasn't been trusted in a while.
Until next week!
